Verna Sloan retires from Orange Grove after 38 years

Orange Grove Center announces the retirement of Verna M. Sloan, a 38 year employee, who worked for the center from August 4, 1972 to October 6, 2010.

Ms. Sloan drove more than 957,000 miles during her tenure without a single reportable, at fault accident.  She was known for her consistent driving skills, timeliness and professionalism. She has twice been awarded the CDL Driver of the Year by OGC (1994 and 2007).  She was also recognized as the Local Driver of the Year for the State of Tennessee by the Tennessee Safety Council in 1995.

Verna was a favorite with her clients and their parents.  One parent remarked, “You can set your clock by her.”

She was respected and acknowledged as a leader among her peers.  Her care and concern for her consumers is truly laudable.  In addition to serving clients in the Apison, Ooltewah, and Collegedale areas, Verna served for several years as an administrative runner, faithfully running errands throughout the city.  She has always demonstrated a compassionate concern for her clients and co-workers in times of crisis and need.

Verna would be the first to solicit donations when anyone was experiencing a time of difficulty.    Her bus was always one of the cleanest and best cared for in the fleet. She took pride in her work as a school bus driver.

We, her family here at Orange Grove, will certainly miss Verna and all the love and joy she circulated around the center each day.  Best wishes to her!
